Animal experiments: Replace – Reduce – Refine

It seems unlikely that science will be able to completely dispense with animal experiments in the foreseeable future. And the biomedical research being conducted at Saarland University also relies on animal testing. However, researchers at the university are working to keep the number of animal experiments conducted as low as possible and to minimize animal pain and suffering.

Scientists are required to apply the 3Rs principle (Replace, Reduce, Refine) when planning, preparing and carrying out their experiments. The Saar 3R Platform (3RPS) website has been set up to help researchers apply tried-and-trusted 3R methods. The 3RPS website lists alternatives to animal testing as well as research contacts who have established these methods in Saarland.
