Onboarding for students: digital learning platforms and other workshops

From October 6th to 8th, all first-semester students will be introduced to the Saarland University (UdS) learning platforms: LSF (online course catalog), Microsoft Teams (chat-based workspace), and Moodle (learning management system). These are the main tools for digital teaching at Saarland University (UdS). You’ll also receive additional helpful tips and information about free continuing education opportunities, as well as digital resources available through campus licenses, such as Turnitin, AI tools for your studies, and the UdS app. The following hybrid sessions (in-person and online) are available. Space for in-person participation is limited.

You are welcome to log in to MS Teams before the event (the desktop version is recommended so you can try it out directly in Teams during the event). Your username is your UdS-Kennung@uni-saarland.de. If you haven’t yet received your UdS ID (HIZ ID) and password by mail from HIZ, please simply attend the course without logging in. For advanced learners: You can also install MS Teams on your computer first to check your call quality in the settings.

Presenting your findings is a fundamental part of any degree program—but good, well-researched results must also be effectively communicated to the audience, preferably in a way that’s easy to understand. But what’s the best way to do that?

There are many different answers to this question, which is why this workshop aims to equip participants with a variety of techniques to help them present more effectively during their studies. We’ll look at different ways to prepare, explore some useful tools, and discuss a few special tricks.

Presenter: Elias Harth is a historian, research associate at the Center for Teaching and Learning at Saarland University, and a podcaster. He is actively involved in knowledge transfer in a variety of ways, whether through student professional development or science communication.

Artificial intelligence has become an integral part of our daily lives, as its integration is far-reaching. This is also true in the academic environment, where the potential applications of AI seem virtually limitless. But how can AI be used effectively in academic studies? What specific applications are there?

In this workshop, I will highlight various ways AI can be used in academia, including translation, data collection and analysis, creating presentations, and conducting research. I will also address the limitations and challenges that may arise when using AI.
