What do I need to know about living and working in Saarbrücken and the local region?

As a new member of staff, you may need to move into temporary accommodation when you relocate to Saarbrücken. The university may be able to offer you one of its guest houses These are small residential units located close to the university campus for one or two people that can be rented at an affordable rate until you have been able to find suitable long-term accommodation. As the number of properties is limited, please get in touch with the university at the earliest opportunity.

If you are looking to relocate permanently, we recommend looking for accommodation within the private sector. If you are based at the Saarbrücken campus, it’s worth looking for accommodation in the near vicinity. If you live in the following areas, you should be able to drive to campus in less than twenty minutes:

• Saarbrücken city; upmarket residential areas include St. Johann from the lower part of Eschberg up to Rothenbühl (area around the St. Johann cemetery up as far as Ilseplatz); St. Johann / Am Staden (from Staden on the banks of the River Saar up to Mainzer Straße and from Bismarckbrücke up to Straße des 13. Januar); the area around Saarbrücken Castle (Schloss); the residential area ‘Am Homburg’; the residential area ‘Scheidter Berg’
• Dudweiler – more upmarket accommodation is generally located in the area ‘Dudweiler Süd’
• St. Ingbert and its associated districts
• Other attractive options can be found somewhat farther away from the city in towns or villages such as Blieskastel, Spiesen-Elversberg, Mandelbachtal or just across the border in the French communes of Stiring-Wendel or Spicheren.

If you are based at the Homburg campus, we recommend looking for accommodation in Homburg itself or in the surrounding towns of Blieskastel, Kirkel, Zweibrücken or Neunkirchen.
