Prof. Dr. Aránzazu del Campo
The adaptive character of living matter inspires and challenges our research as biomaterial chemists. We aim to develop biomaterials and artificial tissues with similar capabilities. For this purpose, we exploit synthetic phototriggers and photoresponsive biological units to design materials with latent functional levels that can be unlocked upon light exposure. Our dynamic materials are used for encapsulating cells, and are able to guide specific cell processes in vitro and in vivo. We translate the findings from this research into predictive tissue models for personalized therapeutics and instructive scaffolds for regenerative medicine. With highly interdisciplinary expertise and infrastructure, and a strong collaborative spirit, our research evolves from molecular to macroscopic responses, synthetic to living substrates, fundamentals to applications, and viceversa.
