Regional anesthesia

Regional anaesthesia is the anaesthetization of a specific area (surgical site), which is numbed with a local anaesthetic. This is usually carried out with the help of an ultrasound device and a thin needle directly near the nerves that supply the area to be anaesthetized. In order to achieve a longer-lasting anesthetic effect, in some cases a small catheter is also inserted through which local anesthetic can be administered for a longer period of time, even over several days.

In a pure regional anesthesia procedure, you as the patient are awake or only slightly drowsy (drug sedation), so that mechanical ventilation and a longer monitoring phase after the operation can be dispensed with.

However, we often combine general anesthesia with regional anesthesia for major operations or very painful procedures in order to achieve optimal pain relief during and after the operation.
