net-ra Project
In the Network for Safety in Regional Anaesthesia & Acute Pain Therapy, hospitals across Germany have joined forces to standardize the documentation of their regional anaesthesia procedures and postoperative acute pain therapies provided by acute-pain services. The data is collected in a registry to facilitate further research. The organizational and scientific project management is based in the Department of Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care Medicine, and Pain Therapy at the University Hospital of the Saarland.
Data from clinical routine documentation may be challenging to process, but it offers a unique opportunity to learn from day-to-day practice and ensure high-quality patient care in the long term.

The net-ra database is globally unique in its structure because it covers the entire process from pre-anaesthesia visits to the end of postoperative pain care with complex postoperative acute pain therapy procedures (continuous regional anaesthesia, intravenous patient-controlled analgesia). For over 10 years we have shaped our expertise by conducting scientific research from our net-ra registry.
Research focus areas:
- Optimization of existing acute pain therapy procedures through e.g. personalised pain therapy, use of artificial intelligence
- Definition of clinically meaningful quality indicators for good postoperative pain therapy
- Identification of patient-related risk factors such as chronic pain syndrome, substance abuse, prior medication, immunosuppression
- Identification of the risks and side effects of regional anaesthesia and acute pain therapy procedures
- Effectiveness of new procedures such as fascial layer blocks
