International Double Degree: Spain
Our double degree partner at the University of Alicante is the Máster en Traducción Institucional. This MA programme places a particular focus on specialised translation in the legal, economic and administrative domains. Each year, up to five students from Saarland University have the opportunity to apply for the double degree programme with the University of Alicante.
Nestled on the Costa Blanca in the south-eastern part of Spain, Alicante is a vibrant city with around 330,000 inhabitants. Alicante is known not only as a popular tourist destination but also as an important economic hub in the region.
Alicante boasts a rich and fascinating history. Originally founded as a Phoenician settlement, the city has seen a diverse array of cultures over the centuries, including Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans and Arabs, whose influences are still evident in the local culture and architecture. Notable attractions include the impressive Santa Bárbara Castle, which towers above the city, the magnificent Cathedral of St. Nicholas and the charming Santa Cruz historic district, renowned for its colourful facades.
At the end of June, Alicante comes alive with the traditional bonfire festival known as “Hogueras.” During this vibrant celebration, artists create enormous monuments from cardboard and wood, which are then set ablaze after sunset, providing a spectacular display.
Thanks to its Mediterranean location, Alicante enjoys a very comfortable climate year-round and holds the title of the sunniest city in Europe, with an average of 349 hours of sunshine per month. Within the city limits, you’ll find several sandy beaches where you can cool off during the summer. While the city is bordered by the Mediterranean to the east, the hilly terrain to the west offers an ideal setting for hiking enthusiasts.
