SS-Gruppenführer Fritz von Scholz, der eine wichtige Rolle beim nationalsozialistischen Judenmord in Polen und der Ukraine spielte, sei der Großvater von Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz. Bundesaußenministerin Annalena Baerbock soll die Dienste eines deutlich jüngeren Prostituierten aus Nigeria in Anspruch nehmen. Präsident der Ukraine Wolodymyr Selenskyj soll längst eine Villa von Goebbels am Bogensee erworben haben. Der Chef des ukrainischen Militärgeheimdienstes HUR Kyrylo Budanow, werde heimlich in der Charité behandelt. Die Liste russischer Falschmeldungen lässt sich beinah unendlich fortsetzen.

In dieser Veranstaltung steht die russische Propaganda in Deutschland und Europa im Vordergrund. Besonders die Bundesrepublik spielt dabei eine Schlüsselrolle – nicht nur als aus russischer Sicht wichtigstes Land in der EU, sondern auch wegen der größten russischsprachigen Community in Europa. Es wird insbesondere eingegangen auf die Narrative und Methoden der Propaganda sowie auf die Bedeutung sozialer Netzwerke – etwa des Messengerdienstes Telegram und der Video-Plattform TikTok.

In dieser Veranstaltung sollen die rechtlichen Grundlagen vermittelt werden, die den Berufsalltag von Journalisten und Medienschaffenden quer durch Europa prägen. Ebenso wird aber auch die Bedeutung der Medien als „Vierte Gewalt” in einem demokratischen und rechtsstaatlichen Europa beleuchtet. Gegenstand der Veranstaltung sind dabei insbesondere Fragestellungen des presserechtlichen Äußerungsrechts, des Fotografie- und Bildnisschutzes, des Urheber- und Lizenzrechts, des Rundfunkrechts oder des Internetrechts.

„Shakespeare war doch dieser Komponist, der den Kubismus erfunden hat.“ – Hier herrscht deutliche Verwirrung. „War die Aufklärung nicht im 13. Jahrhundert, und Karl der Große ihr wichtigster Vertreter?“ – Auch nicht so ganz korrekt. Sich in der europäischen Kulturgeschichte zurechtzufinden, ist nicht einfach. Tausend Begriffe und Epochenbezeichnungen schwirren durch den akademischen Betrieb. Zudem kocht jede Disziplin ihr eigenes Begriffssüppchen: Aufklärung, Barock, Frühe Neuzeit – sind das unterschiedliche Dinge, oder sind sie miteinander verbunden?

Ziel der Übung wird sein, Ordnung in Epochenbegriffe zu bringen und die wichtigsten geistes- und kulturgeschichtliche Strömungen mit ihren zentralen Konzepten zu erarbeiten. Am Ende sollen die Studierenden in der Lage sein, sich in der europäischen Kulturgeschichte zu orientieren, Zusammenhänge zu erkennen und die disziplinären Unterschiede zu verstehen.

This class is an introductionary course for incoming international students and Erasmus students. It gives a broad overview about living and studying in Europe as a European citizen. The students gain interdisciplinary knowledge about European history, politics and cultures as well as about intercultural theories and multilingualism in Europe.

Recently, EUrope has been struggling with multiple crises, referred to as polycrises in public and academic discourse. After the years of Euroenthusiasm following the fall of communism, the democratisation process and EU enlargement, EUrope is now being shaken by multiple crises such as the rise of populism and Euroscepticism, the so-called 'migration crisis', the Covid-19 rebordering and the consequences of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. As a result, the European narratives of post-war peace-building, the successful integration process within the European Community/European Union and European unity in diversity no longer seem valid. However, from the very beginning, the European grand narrative has included borders and border processes towards various "others" - the Orient, the East, the Balkans, racialised migrants, etc. - that assert European superiority so that it can be argued that borders are inherited in European self-understanding. The aim of the seminar is to discuss key conceptualisations of Europe and the European Union defined through the lens of narratives in the context of the changing geopolitical situation.

What do European societies have in common - a shared history, cultural heritage, collective memory, democratic legal system, social structure or shared values? Or is European unity a myth constructed for various political purposes? The lecture aims to discuss selected theories and key concepts of ethnicity, nationalism and civilisations and then takes a closer look at conceptualisations of Europe and its multiple bordering process towards ”others” (the East, the Balkans, the Orient). It provides insights into the ways in which European societies have emerged as national societies, and how they have been transformed by conflicts, border shifts, and processes of regional integration in the context of globalisation.

East-Central Europe appears as a political idea or a constructed region bordered by the Baltic, the Adriatic and the Black Sea. It is marked by turbulent historical events, caught between centre and periphery and shaped by specific cultural characteristics. Poland is a perfect illustration of the transformation of East-Central Europe, with all its identity dilemmas, complexes of being a periphery and aspirations to play a leading role in the Intermarium. The aim of the course is to discuss the ideas and myths of East-Central Europe (Mitteleuropa, Central Europe, East-Central Europe, Intermarium) and then to illustrate the recent transformations through the case of Poland.
