The importance of an active data economy has been growing enormously in recent years. Many companies require data or data products from third parties, while at the same time more and more companies see their core business in data trading itself. Regulation that serves to balance social interests appears necessary here. In the area of digitally networked value creation systems, a balance must be struck between the social interest in a functioning data economy on the one hand - and the social interest in protecting the rights and freedoms of natural persons or the protection of trade secrets and copyrights on the other.
In the European Union, a holistic regulatory approach has recently been developed and, based on the European Data Strategy, various legal acts have been adopted to ensure a suitable balance between these interests.
The EDWI project - Influence of data space regulation on digitally networked value creation in industry - aims to examine whether the objectives set, particularly with regard to practical use, legal certainty and legal and technical implementation approaches, can be realistically achieved.
