Researching TAS
Research
Introductory Remarks
There is no single secondary sources we can recommend - some articles are listed in the MLA, some can only be found in JSTOR (which is more interdisciplinary), others are only listed in PAO or PIO. OLC surveys many journals not surveyed by the MLA and others. Google Scholar is a powerful search tool that performs a cross search of several archives, but it isn't comprehensive. Even our OPAC catalogue does not list all books in our Institute's Library.
- The sources listed below are the major repositories for scholarly articles and books.
- Encyclopedic information, sociological data, and other reference-type information can be found in the handbooks listed in the reference sections "Literature and Culture"and "Social Sciences"
- If you are looking for research on a specific region, you might like to also consult the corresponding section in our TAS Collection. Each section (e.g. SDS, PCB, AFR ...) lists the specialized research portals and bibliographies.
- A concise introduction to research strategies and tools can be found on the LOTSE website
Research Literature: Bibliographies and Repositories
- The Database Infosystem is a service that lists scientific databases.
- This is the most powerful and comprehensive search tool as you can search several databases simultaneously. We can recommend that you go to any of these database:
- Academic Search Complete,
- Humanities International Complete,
- Literary Reference Centre
- MLA International Bibliography.
- vpn-client necessary
- Note: there are more refined search options if the MLA is searched on its own.
- Searches peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, abstracts and articles, from academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories, universities and other scholarly organizations. Google scholar gives you a sense of an article's importance by telling you how often it has been quoted in other publications.
- In contrast to the Internet Archive, Google Books allows a full-text search in its growing repository of scanned books. This is a very useful tool since databases like the MLA, for instance, don't cover monographs.
Some books can be viewed in google books. If a book cannot be accessed, try obtaining it from the Internet Archive.
- This is an interdisciplinary digital library providing texts, films, and music which is much broader than Google Scholar. Especially older scholarly books, such as literary histories and criticism, but also fiction and drama, can be retrieved here.
- International Bibliography of Book Reviews of Scholarly Literature in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Excellent source for information on the most recent publications.
- vpn-client necessary
- One of the major interdisciplinary article repositories with access to the full texts of over one thousand academic journals and other scholarly content. Note: The most recent issues of the collected journals cannot be accessed.
- vpn-client necessary
- This is another major database for bibliographical research concerning English and American studies. Contains over 230.000 articles and book reviews, many from smaller journals not considered by the MLA.
- This OLC-SSG Anglistik is a segment of Online Contents (OLC), a database which surveys more than 24.000 journals from all academic fields.
- vpn-client necessary
- Similar to JSTOR: a repository of hundreds of digitised journals published in the arts, humanities and social sciences. It provides researchers with access to more than 200 years of scholarship, spread across a wide variety of subject areas. (Information from PAO website)
- vpn-client necessary
- Electronic index to millions of articles published in over 6,000 periodicals in the humanities and social sciences. The chronological coverage is going back over 300 years and also includes foreign language sources.
- vpn-client necessary
- Complete holdings of the central university library (SULB) and of the holdings of our departmental library (IB).
- If you don't find a book in this catalogue it does not mean that it is not on the shelves of the IB, especially if the book was published before 2000.
- The logic of the signatures of the TAS section is explained here.
- WorldCat is the world's largest network of library content and services. You can search for articles in periodicals as well as for books, but also for music CDs and videos. A keyword search delivers a broad bibliography on an author or topic. If you're logged in VPN, then you can acess downloadable audiobooks and texts.

In categorizing study materials for Transcultural Anglophone Studies, national boundaries have played less of a role than regional commonalities in grouping together the post-colonies; the work of ethnic minority writers demands the inclusion of Britain and North America, while the fact that South Asia and its diasporas form the chief area of research for TAS in Saarbrücken means that this category subsumes the other regional categories in bringing together thematically-related texts which would otherwise have been scattered owing to area considerations.
In keeping with these directives, texts have been catalogued in accordance with either the location and/or the cultural identification of the Anglophone transcultural writers being studied at Saarland University.
The following abbreviations are in use for categorizing TAS materials, also in the departmental library:
AFR | African writers
|
CAR | Caribbean writers: Antigua, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Guyana, Jamaica, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago |
NLT
