It is perhaps fitting that the Department of English is celebrating hosting 20 straight Teachers’ Days in the same year that our parent institution, the University of the Saarland, is celebrating its 75th year as the federal state’s top bastion of higher education. Teachers’ Day was, according to reputable sources, the first of its kind in not only the Saarland but the greater region as well, and now shares the academic calendar with a host of other similar events put on by various language departments in the Saarland, Rheinland-Pfalz, Luxembourg and France. The planning committee also takes pride in the fact that we are gathering to celebrate 20 consecutive Teachers’ Days without a year off, having pushed through the Covid-19 pandemic with online incarnations of our usual mix of keynote presentations, workshops, and publisher participation.
Although Teachers’ Day usually boasts a wide range of speakers and interest areas from year to year, there is always one topic that serves as a unifying focus—recall, for example, the 2012 event, “Pronouncing English,” and “The madness of methods: different routes to EFL competencies” from 2014. To celebrate our platinum anniversary, we have chosen a more open format, and we trust that many of our regulars will recognize a few familiar names and faces. And as part of our toast to the 20th Teachers’ Day, we have also scored a different venue for the event, namely the newly renovated Musiksaal, a hop, skip and a jump from the department’s old haunts in Building C5 3.
Join us in Saarbrücken for the 20th annual Teachers' Day (and Teachers' Day Eve :-).
As always, you will have the opportunity to exchange ideas with other teachers and experts both from Germany and abroad. We look forward to welcoming you in September!
