Stimulus-responsive Antimicrobial and Protein-repellent Coatings for Medical Devices

Projektverantwortlicher: Stefan Paschke

In the context of our SMAMP projects, we have found that some pH-responsive polyzwitterions, whose overall charge can be switched from neutral to polycationic, can also reversibly alter their properties from protein-repellent to antimicrobial – a property so far unprecedented in polymer materials. In this project, we study the structure-property relationships of such polyzwitterions, including their long-term stability and suitability as coatings for medical materials. In the image, a coated piece of a urinary catheters is shown. The project was funded by the BMBF (Validierungs-Förderungsprogramm VIP+, link www.validierungsfoerderung.de) from 2018-2021.
