Important Information

Information for the application to the study programme "Master in Mathematics" at Saarland University

Are you interested in pursuing a Master's degree in Mathematics at Saarland University? Before you submit your application, we would like to clarify the prerequisites we expect from incoming Master's students. We have prepared a

collection of exercises

in Linear Algebra, Real Analysis, Numerics, and Stochastics, along with recommended literature to help you refresh your knowledge of these topics.

We anticipate that all successful applicants will have a solid understanding of the material typically covered in basic undergraduate courses, enabling them to solve the provided exercises. A strong command of Linear Algebra and Real Analysis is absolutely essential for success in our Master’s programme. Proficiency in Numerics or Stochastics is not mandatory for admission; however, lacking expertise in either of these areas will limit your options regarding our programme’s focus areas.

In addition, the excercise collection includes more advanced problems in Algebra, Measure Theory, and Complex Analysis, which are also relevant for many of our Master's-level courses. If you find that you need to strengthen your background in any of these areas, we can support you with a personalized self-study plan to help you close those gaps.

The posted exercises are for your self-assessment only; we do not require you to submit solutions. However, we do ask that you honestly evaluate your ability to solve them.

Statement of Purpose Requirements
In your application’s Statement of Purpose, please address the following:

  1. Do you have sufficient knowledge in Linear Algebra and Real Analysis to tackle the posted exercises?
  2. What is your current level of knowledge in Algebra, Measure Theory, Complex Analysis, Numerics, and Stochastics?

Furthermore, we would appreciate if you could tell us:

  • Why do you want to pursue a Master’s degree in Mathematics?
  • Which areas of Mathematics particularly interest you, and why?
  • What are your professional goals, and how will a Master’s degree help you achieve them?

We look forward to learning more about you! Please submit your application, including the requested information, through our online application system.
