(Free capacities: from December 2024 for Master's theses)
The department of Digital Transformation and Entrepreneurship offers students of economics at Saarland University the supervision of their thesis at all drawing dates of the Economics Examination Office. However, in order to be able to guarantee you high-quality supervision, the allocation of topics requires free supervision capacities. All interested parties are therefore requested to apply using the documents described here.
Application process
Students must apply for a thesis at the Department of DTE at least two months before the examination office's deadline (Ziehungstermin).
The application deadline is the first Wednesday of each month!
By the second Wednesday of the month, you will receive feedback from us as to whether you are a suitable candidate for a thesis at the department of DTE and, if so, the contact details of the supervising research assistant to discuss the next steps.
The aim of this procedure is to provide a fairer, more efficient and better supervision of theses. Thank you very much for your understanding and cooperation!
Note: A thesis place cannot be guaranteed.

Requirements of the department
Depending on the topic chosen, students are expected to have solid knowledge in the areas of digital transformation, digital entrepreneurship or technology and innovation management to write their thesis. Proof of this knowledge can be provided by successfully completing the relevant courses in the respective degree programmes. In addition, candidates are expected to have sufficient knowledge of the design and writing of scientific papers and the essential elements of scientific working methods. It is essential that you familiarise yourself with the relevant procedures, rules and quality criteria at an early stage. The library, for example, has an extensive repertoire of relevant literature available for this purpose.
Selection of topics
Theses in the department are centred around the topics of digital transformation and entrepreneurship. In addition to a range of predefined topics offered by the department, both self-selected and practice-related topics in collaboration with cooperation partners are possible. Consequently, there are two approaches to the initial topic selection:
You can find information on current topic areas here. Please carry out a brief initial search on the key terms of the subject area you are interested in so that you know what it is about. Please enter your subject preference in the application form.
We ask you to define your topic preferences as broadly as possible (e.g. not two artificial intelligence topics or two platform topics) so that we can better utilise our supervisory capacities!
In this variant, you will work independently on a self-defined topic. A thematic reference to the research areas of the department should be given. Work in cooperation with business practice can only be supervised if a clear scientific objective and a suitable method are at the centre of the project. When applying with a self-defined topic, the following three points in particular should be outlined in your application:
- Main topic of your thesis
- Possible research question (what questions do you want to answer with your thesis?)
- Possible methodology and approach (how do you intend to answer the questions?)

Formal requirements
The application documents include the following:
- Application form for a thesis in the DTE department
- Extract of the achievements in the current study programme
- Detailed letter of motivation (3/4 DIN A4 page)
- CV

Guidelines

Number of pages
- German, in the format of the chair's guidelines (see below)
- 35 text pages (±10 %)
- optionally in English, in the format of a scientific publication
- 25 text pages (±10 %)
Format guidelines
- You will find a format template in the following document.
- Unless otherwise specified by your supervisor, the style of the American Psychological Association (APA) will be used.
Submission of the paper
- DIN A4 format and printed on one side only
- Submission of 2 printed copies to the examination office
- Submission of a digital version (USB stick) to the examination office
- In general, the requirements of the examination office apply
- Please send the thesis additionally to your supervisor by e-mail
