Quantum materials
Quantum materials are materials whose often exotic properties are governed by quantum mechanics and quantum effects beyond the Pauli exclusion principle play a major role. This includes weakly interacting systems with a nontrivial electronic band topology and geometry such as topological insulators and semimetals. Our group has a strong interest in magnetic topological phases such as axion insulators that exhibit a large and quantized magnetoelectric response in the bulk.
Another class of quantum materials are correlated systems where the Coulomb interactions between electrons results in entangled wavefunctions and cooperative phenomena beyond the single-electron approximation. Our group works on frustrated magnets, emergent orders such as nematicity, unconventional superconductors, and quantum spin liquids.
